yearning: Gattaca & Blade Runner

Wow. Wow....

Just ," W-O-W!"

I watched both of these movies with my brother the other night. I have a confession to make:  I have a strange fetish for these sci-fi philosophical films.

Both of these movies have brilliant twists at the end that lead you to think about the film forever. My idea of the  excellence behind Gattaca, though, is much different from the brilliance of Blade Runner. Gattaca's setting was very different from the typical futuristic vision that was made by movies en masse. The themes are also very easy to relate to. Vincent's passion for space and burning desire to join the Gattaca space program leads his character to develop through different conflicts. Vincent rises through the ranks of the program, but he is known as Jerome, a one-time Olympic swimmer. Throughout the movie, messages of inspiration are shot at the audience. In Blade Runner, Deckard, retired android hunter, is sent on a final mission. Throughout the movie, the shots are made in cloudy and mysterious and futuristic areas. The whole movie is very dark and gloomy. The movie's plot line moves so slowly, that, in fact, the movie should be renamed Blade Crawler. The ending twist is both emotionally powerful and thought provoking.

Have you seen these movies? If so, what did you think about them? Do you think Deckard is an android or human?

If not, what type of movies do you enjoy? Fill us in with some examples too!

  1. I could lie and say ive seen em, just to make this more interesting...but truth to be told, i haven't seen gattaca or blade runner. Im sorry that i can't say anything useful this time (ok ok, i know, it's not like i've ever said something useful before either hahaha)

  2. Blade Runner is awesome. I've always loved it. I'm sad to hear they're doing a remake or whatever. I wish they'd just leave classics like these alone.

  12. I believe it is clear that Deckard is an android. Haven't watched both of those movies in a long time maybe i should rewatch them soon enough. Also i haven't played Blade Runner the adventure game.. i believe it's a prequel to the movies' events. A new Deckard's story sounds great.

  14. I've only seen Gattaca. Loved it. It was a very interesting film, and I liked how they showed you that with enough determination you could do anything.

I think I once read an interview in wich they said that Harrison Ford was supposed to be a robot but they decided to leave it as an open ending...

  16. Aww Yeah. Love Gattaca and Blade Runner. Deckard is a replicant, no matter what Harrison Ford says :P

  17. Haven't seen either, but I have heard the title blade runner before. I'm not much of a movie person, I don't like being confined to one thing for hours. I HATE stupid movies that are all computer animated with stupid things that are supposed to be funny, such as Transformers.

  20. I love Blade Runner. The Directors Cut is definetly a MASTERPIECE. I love the music especially - I could call it magnum opus of Vangelis. You also remembered me about GATTACA. I heard that's a good movie.

  21. I haven't seen any of those D;
I'm pretty boring, I tend to just watch tv series over and over, like The Mighty Boosh, Flight of the Conchords, The Office and The Big Bang Theory xD

  22. I reckon Deckard is human, making him a replicant would be pushing credibility a bit to far. The problem with Ridley Scot films is they look great but he isn't so good at characterisation or stories that you buy into.
I saw Gattaca several years ago and remember it as being a good, solid sc-fi film that reminded me of the 'hard' sci-fi fiction of Isaac Asminov.

  23. seen both of them, probably even wrote about blade runner in my blog. i think Dekard should be android from the looks of it, but that's the twist that makes you think for yourself. Key there is the unicorn and that dreams can be implanted. Gattaca is also good, but I do not think that he should have burned himself, i mean, it is good for the plot, but not really smart in my opinion, anywho, they are all good :) have some similar movies somewhere in my blog, have a look, maybe you'll find something good there

  24. I like Gattaca a lot too.
I saw Blade Runner once and it did not leave much of an impression. I'll have to rewatch it some time.

  25. loved both of them!
There is a Blade Runner 2 in the works. If Deckard is an android i think i will be a bit disappointed.

  30. I still haven't seen either. It seems like it's about time I watch em!

  31. I didn't think that Deckard was an android until I heard that theory. I re-watched Blade Runner with that in mind but it is still unclear whether or not he is an android.
